Is the semester already half over? It is almost the end of October, so now the mad dash to begin projects, term papers and other school-related stuff has commenced. But just because crunch time is beginning does not mean you cannot have a little bit of fun. Halloween is 12 days away and there are plenty of parties and events to attend, costumed or otherwise. If you don't have a costume yet, try the obvious places to shop, such as Party City or Hot Topic, but Sugaree's on the square and any of the vintage stores in Nashville are also quality costumes places.

There are some different holiday-themed events in the area. Discovery Center on Murfree Springs Road is having a Great Pumpkin Festival on Thursday, Oct. 26 from 4-7 p.m. The Center will have a "variety of fun activities," including a treasure hunt in the Dark Lagoon and a costume contest for an additional $1. This event is free for Discovery Center members and $5 for non-members.

Barfield Crescent Park is holding a Haunted Hayride on Oct. 25-28. The hayride begins at dark and lasts until 9 p.m., so dress appropriately. It costs $5 a person to travel down Old Scream Road. If fright is not your thing, there is a Not-So-Haunted Hayride Oct. 27 and 28 from 5-7 p.m. This one costs $3 a person and is also held at Barfield Crescent Park. For more information on the hayride and other Halloween events held by Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation, visit www.murfreesborotn.gov/ or call 890-5333.

Local bands are getting the scary spirit (ha-ha). WMTS 88.3 is holding a costume party on Friday, Oct. 20 at 2645 Middle Tennessee Boulevard. Entrance is free with a costume and $2 without one; donations are accepted, as stated on their website. If you attend, please park on Division Street where the radio station has requested. But if attending a show within the 'Boro is your thing, check out our event calendar on page 6. Several shows may have a Halloween theme, so pick your poison and check the band's MySpace or website for more information.

This week, our cover story is on local "arena pop rock" band The Compromise. From the interview, these guys are interesting and extremely humorous; I'm definitely interested in catching the band's next gig at Bluesboro. Reid, our resident movie man, has compiled a list of frightening DVD rentals that provide a great alternative to the "Friday the 13" series. You will find those on page 8. Happy renting!

Enjoy the schizophrenic fall weather while you can. It will be cold soon, I promise. As always, if you have something to get off your chest or want your event listed in the calendar, e-mail us at slflash@mtsu.edu. Next week, we'll be covering the Hitchcock Horror Fest at the KUC Theater and an update on the semi-finals of MTSU Idol. Peace!
