In conjunction with Friday's Earth Day, MTSU will host "Make a Difference Week" with a multitude of service projects and a performance by Sheryl Crow.

The week will begin Monday night with the Golden Raider's Service Project. Students will provide services to the MTSU Alumni Golden Raiders by cleaning gutters, trimming trees and bushes and helping with other household projects.

Tuesday night will feature a presentation and lecture by Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow and Laurie David, global warming activist and founder of Stop Global Warming.

The lecture and presentation is for MTSU students to learn about the issue of global warming and will feature remarks by David, a short performance by Crow and clips from "An Inconvenient Truth." While the show is open to all students, faculty and staff, it is not open to the general public.

In conjunction with the week, Al Gore's movie "An Inconvenient Truth" will be shown at the Keathley University Center Theatre Monday through Thursday.

The week will culminate with the Kappa Delta's fourth annual Wing Fling on Saturday, on the Alumni Center lawn.

The Wing Fling brings together Murfreesboro restaurants to compete for the "Best Tasting Wings in the 'Boro." Prizes will be given to the top restaurant, fraternity and sorority. All proceeds for the event will benefit the Murfreesboro Exchange Club Family Center and Prevent Child Abuse America.

The Exchange Club Family Center is a local organization that works to prevent child abuse, and will receive 80 percent of the money raised at the event. "Last year's Wing Fling raised $12,500 and we hope to raise $15,000 this year," said Christina Davidson, public relations chair for Kappa Delta.

Judges and community members will taste the wings and vote on what recipe is the best. Judges for this year's competition include Barb Ford, gourmet food columnist for The Daily New Journal, Anantha Babbili, dean of the MTSU College of Mass Communication and Mary Gollapalle, Babbili's wife. There will also be a silent auction, kids games and a wing-eating contest.

Davidson said that every Kappa Delta chapter across the United States does a philanthropic event to help raise money for Prevent Child Abuse America.

"[We are] very proud to say that this is our event," Davidson said. "We might sell chicken wings, but we raise a lot of money to give back to the community. It means a lot to be able to do this."

Friday will feature an Earth Day festival at noon on the Murphy Center lawn and in the arena. Comedian Zach Galifianakis, who appeared on Comedy Central's show "Dog Bites Man," will be performing, along with several bands, including Heartland and Oteil & The Peacemakers.

The Earth Day festival is free and open to the public. The festival will begin outside Murphy center at noon and will move inside the center at 7 p.m.
