Although the rain threatened the celebration, the event continued with speakers such as president Sidney McPhee, Tom Tozer, director of News and Public Affairs, and Sandra Wilson, junior basic and applied sciences major and Student Government Association president.
People Get and S.O.S were two of the local groups playing live as students and visitors enjoyed refreshments.
Inflatables were set up while demonstrations were given throughout the building to show students, faculty and members of the recreation center around the new additions.
As the university expands you have to expand facilities," said Katy Rayburn, Graduate student and campus recreation employee.
The facility is now open for members with a new weight room that is twice the size with plenty of new equipment to fill it.
"The expansion is really good for people who use the recreation center because it's going to create enough space for everyone to comfortably work out," Rayburn said.
"It's a good improvement, and it will bring more students to the recreation center," said Caitlin Queen, freshman biology major."The services just make it more convenient."
"Our student body has grown so much in the last couple of years," said Chris Wood, program assistant for intermural sports at the recreation center. "The facility we had just wasn't big enough and having the Wellness Center in with us will also be very beneficial to students because it's in a more essential area."
"My favorites are the new cardio room and the aerobic classes that they got to add," said Chelsea Odil, sophomore nursing major. "It's a lot of fun and I can already tell that there are more people showing up."
The Recreation Center has a new cardio room with new equipment and a second aerobic/sport clubroom that will help add to fitness classes.
Along with all of those changes the facility has also added a family changing room and a new improved Outdoor Equipment Rental area.
"The renovations give the Recreation Center and the Wellness Center a chance to collaborate and produce programs that can really focus on the Wellness of students," said Gene Fitch, associate vice president for Student Affairs and dean of Student Life.
"Now that the construction is over, I think that we are really going to see a difference," Fitch said. "People just don't like all of the dust and the inconvenience of construction."
"MTSU is building for the future, and this is just our first step towards that future."

I love the new facilities, but the construction is a bother.
