One-In-Teen Youth Services, a non-profit organization in Nashville, is seeking to expand its membership in order to assist sexual minority youth by creating support and leadership opportunities.
Founded in 1989, One-In-Teen serves gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth from ages 14 to 22 in middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky.
"The attendance at a typical meeting is between eight to 14 people," said James Vincent-Huff, a board member of One-In-Teen.
Anyone can attend One-In-Teen meetings, held every Wednesday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at 617 Hart Lane, as long as they meet the age requirement. It is also recommended that they be gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning or inter-sexed.
"The most rewarding part of One-In-Teen for me is being able to reach out to the younger generation so that they know that they have a place they can go and be themselves with no worry of judgment," Vincent-Huff said.
"The way people can help out the organization is to volunteer their time, volunteer as a sponsor or donate money," Vincent-Huff said.
One-In-Teen also holds fundraisers such as yard sales and car washes and corresponds with sponsors in order to generate funding for its meetings and social events.
The group's Web site, one-in-teen.org, provides information for interested persons on upcoming events and information on attending the meetings.
"I'd like One-In-Teen to grow as an organization and to hopefully get more people to attend and to be involved," Vincent-Huff said.
One-In-Teen hopes to grow in membership and sponsorship in order to keep providing a safe haven for sexual minority youth.
