The Tennessee State report card for 2007 showed an 8.5 percent dropout rate for the state.
This statistic was measured by the amount of freshman who entered high school and did not graduate in four years.
The state goal for 2007 was 10 percent. The dropout rate in the state has noticeably decreased in the last five years.
In 2006 the rate was 9.8 percent, 2005 had 10.4 percent, 2004 was 10.7 percent, and 2003 had the highest dropout rate in five years with 11.3 percent.
Rutherford County as a whole had a 5.5 percent dropout rate.
The 6 schools that were listed on the report card had the following dropout rates: Blackman High School had 3.4 percent, Laverne High School had 6 percent, Oakland High School had 6.7 percent, Riverdale High had 5.8 percent, Siegel High School had 6 percent, and Smyrna High School had 6.7 percent.
Currently Blackman High School has the lowest dropout rate in Rutherford County by at least 2.4 percent.
The Tennessee State report card is a vital process to gaining data on the progress of schools. Katharine Mosher, a Depute Director of the Department of Education, said.
"It is important to evaluate high schools on a regular basis to recognize what they are doing that works so we can share it with the other schools and also determine areas that need improvement so we could provide assistance," Mosher said.
