Until a permanent vice provost for Academic Affairs is chosen, Diane Miller will be serving in the interim.
After four years, Jack Thomas, former vice provost, left the university at the end of December and began serving as Provost and Academic Vice President for Western Illinois University.
It was announced that Miller, director of the McNair program and the Undergraduate Research Center, would be taking Thomas' place as interim vice provost on Jan. 2. Miller also stepped in as vice provost four years ago, while the university selected Thomas for the position.
Miller was chosen by Executive Vice President and Provost Kaylene Gebert and President Sidney McPhee to stand in as interim because, Gebert said, "Dr. Miller is extremely knowledgeable about MTSU and its programs, policies and faculty. She is a very competent administrator and is very committed to MTSU."
"I certainly appreciate Dr. Gebert's vote of confidence," Miller said. "I'm looking forward to serving members of the faculty and the student body."
She has served as interim vice provost for two and a half years prior to Jack Thomas.
"We have not yet gotten approval from the search committee" to officially start the application process for the position, Gebert said. "We would hope to have a permanent person named by the beginning of the fall semester."
As interim vice provost, Miller is responsible for working with academic programs, proposals and reviews, Gebert said. She will be working with a number of interdisciplinary centers, such as the African American Program, Aging Studies, Center for Popular Music and Health and Human Services.
Miller has also been a professor in mathematical sciences at MTSU for almost 15 years.
