Between the stress and pressures surrounding class work and studying, sometimes it can be nice to relax and be entertained or take place in non-class-related activities, which is where Student Programming comes in.
Student Programming, the student organization responsible for bringing programs and events to MTSU, was given $67,000 for the current school year. Of that money, only a small portion went towards the programs and events that were presented during the fall semester, leaving the majority of the money to be spent during the spring semester.
"We only spent about $7,000 of the money during the fall semester," says Jennifer Fleshman, variety chair of student programming. "Besides what we already have scheduled, we are looking into getting a fairly popular act in this semester."
The organization gets its funding from the $3 student-activity-fee portion of tuition.
"This is not enough to get the headliner acts that students really want to see come to MTSU, like Dave Matthews," said Jeremy Davis, films chair of student programing. "The only way we could get these types of acts to come would be if the student activity fee were raised. Even as little as $2 would make a huge difference."
Headliner acts that generate high attendance have performed at MTSU in years past, including Elvis, Elton John, Bill Cosby, Chicago, The Beach Boys, Steve Miller Band, Pearl Jam and Phish.
Some students disagree with the choice of acts that have been brought to MTSU in more recent years.
"I know we had Big Boi here once a few semesters ago. I think money should have been spent more wisely," says Tim Pickering, senior history major.
Students who disagree with the choice of programs and events that are brought to MTSU are encouraged by Student Programming to get more involved.
"We're always looking for students to get involved in Student Programming. After all, it is their money," says Greg Feiling, coordinator for Student Programming. "There are no fees to join. The only thing required is an interest in entertainment,"
