Man dead after shootout in Whitwell parking lot

WHITWELL, Tenn. (AP) _ One man is dead after a shootout in the parking lot of a Whitwell auto parts store.
Authorities said two men exchanged gunfire shortly before the lunch hour Monday on Highway 28 outside Whitwell Auto Parts. One man was killed and another was taken to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga in unknown condition.
Police said they know the motive but declined to release it. They said the two knew each other.
One man pulled into the parking lot, and the two then began firing handguns, officers said. Witnesses said several shots were exchanged.
Several people inside the store escaped injury.
No identities were released. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was called to handle the probe.
